MyHeritage Breach Leaks Million of Account Details
MyHeritage Data Breach over 92 Million Users Data Leaked: Over 92 million account details from the Genealogy and DNA Testing Service the MyHeritage were found on a private server, according to a release which was made by the company on Monday.
According to the release of the report, the breach has occurred on October 26th 2017, and probably the data discovered includes the users who signed up for the service on or before that date, totaling over 92,283,889 people.
MyHeritage is an isreal based ancestry platform where users are able to create their family trees and search through familial and historical records.
The MyHeritage became aware of this breach after a security researcher out to the company’s chief information security officer with “a file named myheritage containing email addresses and hashed passwords, on a private server outside of MyHeritage,” the release read. According to the researcher that there was no other data being discovered on that piece of server.
The other data, that includes like DNA Data and Credit Card information is stored on a separate system from those that house the username and all the email information.
The company has said that there is no reason to believe that other than username and passwords there have been no other sensitive data being breached.
MyHeritage has since setup a response team that is basically investigating the incident and is “taking immediate steps to engage a leading, independent cybersecurity firm” to look into the scope of breach.
Correction 6/5/2018: This headline has been corrected to clarify that email and other account details were leaked, but not other information such as user DNA etc.
