Cyber Attack On Careem: Data of 14 Million Customers Were Stolen

Careem Victims of Cyber Attack Compromising 14 Million User’s Data: Careem, Uber’s main ride app competitor in the Middle East, was hit by a huge cyber attack that jeopardized the data of almost 14 million users, it is said on Monday.

The company learned of the breach, in which they gained the access to a computer system that stored customer and driver complete information. On January 14, it was said in the statement.

Names, Email Addresses, Phone Number and trip data were stolen, though there were no evidence of passwords or credit cards information were stolen – those were held on external third-party server – were compromised, they said.

At the time of the cyber attack on careem has 14 million customers and 558,000 drivers on its platform which were operating in almost 78 cities across the region.

A company spokesman said, “Users who have signed up since the attack were not affected”.

The company careem is one of the region’s most important start-ups, apologized to its users, saying that “they have learned from this experience and will come out of it a stronger and more resilient organization”.

This news of the cyber attack comes at a very sensitive time for a Careem, as which investors tests appetite for a bid to raise as much as $500 million to fund the new business lines. Same completed a funding round of the same amount last year.

Careem, which was founded in late 2012, already counts Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding, German carmaker Daimler and Chinese ride-hailer DiDi Chuxing among its investors.

The company has earlier said that they are targeting the profitable in the second half of the 2018. They have also said that an initial public offering is an option under consideration.
